Biographical Details:
Arthur Streeton (1867 - 1943) was born in Mount Duneed, Victoria in 1867. Streeton is one of Australia's most admired traditionalist painters. A member of the famous Heidelberg School of Australian artists, Streeton is perhaps best known for his rural landscapes.
In his formative years, Streeton was influenced by the techniques of the French Impressionists. He commenced studies at the National Gallery Schools in 1882. Around this time he began his association with fellow artists Frederick McCubbin and Tom Roberts - a group that would become the Heidelberg School. Streeton began plein air paintings of rural scenes around Melbourne including areas such as Box Hill and Heidelberg. In 1885 Streeton produced his first solo exhibition at the Victorian Academy of Art.
In 1888 Streeton moved to the Eaglemont estate near Heidelberg that he shared with fellow contemporaries, Tom Roberts, Charles Conder and Walter Withers. He remained at Eaglemont until 1890 where he produced many of his most famous landscapes.
Around the same time, Streeton travelled to Sydney, the Blue Mountains and regions of the Hawkesbury River, where he produced sketches and studies for later paintings. Summer Heat (A Road to Kurrajong), painted around 1896, is a stunning example of Streeton's work from the late 1800s. This work was exhibited in Savill Galleries 'Australian Paintings' exhibition August, 2006.
Between 1897 and 1915, Streeton made several trips to London. He held an exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1900, but unfortunately failed to receive the same public recognition abroad as what he has achieved in Australia. Streeton also spent time in Northern Italy, resulting in an exhibition, Arthur Streeton's Venice in Australia in 1909.
Streeton's paintings are amongst the most collectible of Australian artists and commanded high prices during his life time. Streeton's works appear in most major Australian galleries and museums collection, including the Australian War Memorial, National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Gallery of Australia.
Savill Galleries has been dealing with the work of Arthur Streeton for two decades and will consider the purchase of authentic Streeton paintings held in private and public collections.
