Biographical Details:
Fred William was born in Victoria in 1927. Williams is recognised as one of Australia's finest landscape painters. His reputation and audience is vast on a national and international level.
Between 1943 and 1947, Williams commenced tuition at the old National Gallery Art School before travelling to London and developing his techniques in etching.
Upon his return to Australia in 1957, Williams began to exhibit with commercial galleries on a regular basis, both in Melbourne and interstate. The late 1950s, early 1960s signified years of momentous development in modern Australian art, when Australian painting was receiving wide cultural acceptance. Williams' landscapes were moving to the forefront of art making at this particular time, receiving wide spread recognition for his ability after 1963.
The years between 1963 and 1968, was perhaps the most consistent period of Williams' career. He was working towards perfecting his use of tone and form in a series of disparate landscape views. Throughout this time, Williams developed his own distinct marks to produce a visual language and voice as a painter.
The You Yang landscapes of 1963-64 are regarded as pivotal in Williams career, the quintessential style of Williams appeared. The You Yangs focus on a high-vantage point in the landscape, without any distinct pictorial focus. The artistic challenge here was to transform a seemingly featureless landscape of rocks, scrub and hills into a new picturesque experience.
Williams first visited the Pilbara in May 1979. He produced almost 100 gouaches depicting the dramatic landscape of this remote area in Australia's far north-west. The gouaches represented the landscape - gorges and mountains - as well as intimate studies of spiders in their webs and local wildflowers.
The Pilbara paintings adopt close-up and aerial views. The series illustrates Williams' immediate response to the extraordinary landscape of inland Australia. The Pilbara Series was the last major series painted by Williams before his death in 1982.
Savill Galleries has a long association with Fred Williams work and will consider the purchase of any authentic Williams painting, print or drawing held in public or private collections. |
