Biographical Details:
John Olsen was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1928. Olsen moved to Bondi at the age of seven. He studied at the Julian Ashton School of Art; the Orban School; as well as in Paris and in Spain.
Olsen first achieved public success in 1955 when the National Gallery of Victoria purchased a work. In 1957 he travelled abroad and during this time he painted and delivered exhibitions back to Sydney and Melbourne. Since his return to Sydney in 1960 he has held numerous solo exhibitions in Sydney and Melbourne.
From 1969 to 1971 Olsen lived at the Dunmoochin artists colony, outside Melbourne, working with Clifton Pugh, Fred Williams, Albert Tucker and others. In 1970 he was commissioned by the Dobell Foundation to paint the monumental Sydney Opera House mural Salute to Five Bells. In 1974 he began a series of tours through Central Australia; and later Egypt, Kenya and South Africa; that has fuelled his love of the landscape and its inhabitants.
He has been awarded many prizes and awards including an OBE in 1977 and a major retrospective of his work travelled the country in 1991-92. He is represented in the National Gallery of Australia and all state galleries, many regional galleries and private and corporate collections both in Australia and overseas.
Savill Galleries has been dealing with the work of John Olsen since inception in 1987. The gallery holds a significant collection of Olsen's work and will consider the purchase of authentic John Olsen paintings held in private or public collection.
