Biographical Details:
Robert Juniper was born in Merredin, Western Australia, in 1929. Juniper is considered one of Western Australia's leading landscape artists. He was recently honoured as a 'Living Treasure' by the Western Australian government.
In his work Juniper celebrates the uniqueness of the Western Australian landscape. The aerial perspective is important to Juniper's paintings. The birds eye perspective represents his feelings about the landscape and what is visible to the eye.
Juniper says, 'My aim is to express aesthetically, in an evolved and personal language, a pattern of ideas and memories; the haunting remoteness of the Western Australian landscape, timelessness and agelessness composites; the microscopic picture suggested by an insect's wing, or the arbitrary bas reliefs made by grubs under tree bark.' Robert Juniper, 1979, quoted in Ella Fry, Gallery images, Perth: St George Books, 1984, p52.
Throughout his career, Juniper has realised that Western Australia is a very isolated place to work, but believes that the Western state has allowed him the distance to establish his own style without being influenced the Sydney of Melbourne art scene.
Juniper is acknowledged as a major figure in Australian landscape painting with work represented in many public and private collections. In 1980 Juniper won the prestigious Wynne Prize for landscape painting and his work has also been exhibited in England, Japan and America.
Savill Galleries has a long standing association with works by Robert Juniper. The gallery will consider the purchase of an authentic Robert Juniper painting or print held in private or public collection. |
